Con la extensión exif, se puede trabajar con los datos meta de las imágenes. Por ejemplo, las funciones exif deben ser utilizadas para leer los datos meta de las imágenes tomadas por cámaras digitales, almacenados en el encabezado. Estos datos están comúnmente presentes en las imágenes <acronym>JPEG</acronym> y <acronym>TIFF</acronym>.
