I'd say that the old model needs to be kept for BC compliance: newer models tend to introduce regressions too quickly. Maybe slowly transition to newer implementations?

Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
